Why Are Eye Exams Important?

For many patients, eye diseases and eye conditions can develop without any warning signs. Because of this, these conditions can go unnoticed and untreated, which could lead to permanent vision loss. The only way to protect yourself and detect eye disease development is by attending regular eye exams.

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends that adults between the ages of 18 and 64 have an eye exam every 2 years for routine eye exams. If you wear contact lenses, have diabetes, dry eye or other conditions, annual visits are recommended.

Once you turn 65, AOA recommends annual eye exams. Particular eye issues like cataracts and age-related macular degeneration have a higher risk of developing around this age. You will want to do your part to protect your vision.

You’re considered to be at-risk if:

  • You or your family have a history of eye conditions.
  • You have medical issues that can develop into eye conditions.
  • You take medications with ocular side effects.
  • You wear contact lenses.
  • You have had eye surgery.
  • You have had an eye injury.
  • You have a high refractive error.

What Does an Eye Exam Look Like?

We start each eye exam with a quick conversation regarding your eyes and your overall health, including your family’s health history. We’ll also take the time to answer any questions you may have about your vision. Please ask as many questions as you like! The more information you can provide us, the easier it will be for us to tailor the eye exam to match your needs.

After our quick chat, we’ll move on to finding your most comfortable and efficient visual solutions. Whether driving, using a computer, cell phone or tablet, or reading your eyes need to be focused accurately with the correct type of lens. These assessments help us determine your eyeglass prescriptions.

After determining your eyes’ strength, it is time to assess your eyes’ health. This is an incredibly important part of the eye exam as it helps detect the development of eye diseases and conditions before they can harm your vision. Some of the tools we may use are optomap fundus imaging, tonometry, topography and more.

On top of detecting problems with your vision, eye exams can also identify issues with your overall health, including diabetes and high blood pressure.

Choosing Eyeglasses Or Contacts

After your eye exam, we may recommend eyeglasses or contact lenses to help correct your vision. If this is the case, our optical team will help you find the right fit!

We offer a beautiful line of designer frames and lenses to help match your needs and unique style. We’ll take detailed measurements of your head shape and size to help ensure your eyeglasses fit comfortably.

Perhaps contact lenses are more of a match for you. In that case, our optometrists will spend the time helping you find the right pair of contacts that will offer you clear vision and a comfortable fit for your eyes. You will also be provided with a detailed fitting and information on proper use and maintenance of contact lenses.
